NHL teams are exploring every possible option to improve their rosters ahead of the upcoming season, and according to a recent report, five teams are now reportedly trying to convince a 3-time Stanley Cup-winning goalie—and former Sidney Crosby teammate—to come out of retirement.
According to Allan Walsh via SDPN, the goaltender being targeted for a potential comeback is Marc-Andre Fleury, who retired from the NHL following the 2024–25 season. He appeared in just 26 games that year, allowing 68 goals.
Fleury won three Stanley Cups—in 2009, 2016, and 2017—all alongside Sidney Crosby. The two played together from 2006 through their final championship run in 2017, sharing not only those titles but also numerous awards and milestones during their time with the Penguins.
Which teams are interested?
Walsh’s report doesn’t specify which teams are pursuing Fleury, who played in 1,051 NHL games over his career, posting a 2.60 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. His final contract was a one-year, $2.5 million deal.
The encouraging news on Fleury
Could Fleury actually return to the NHL? That remains unclear, but one positive sign is that he’s still active as a player. After retiring from the league, he announced he’d be available to play in a tournament with Team Canada, potentially reuniting with Crosby. About the opportunity, Fleury said, “I think it’ll be fun to go spend some time together and yell at him in practice a bit, keep him honest.”
