The USA will be playing in its first bronze medal match in Olympic history. They already faced Australia in these Games in the final match of the group stage, which ended up in a goalless draw which was enough for both teams to go through the knockout stage.

The USWNT lost in the semifinals against Canada thanks to a 75th-minute penalty kick from midfielder Jessie Fleming. Meanwhile, Australia was defeated by Sweden in the other semifinal 1-0, with a goal from new Barcelona player Fridolina Rolfo.
