Whether the transfer window is open or not doesn’t seem to matterwhenever a player attracts the interest of any club. Even though it’s been more than a month since the transfer deadline, a number of European giants continue to track potential signings for the foreseeable future.

Benfica have caught everyone’s attention in Matchday 2 of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League when they comfortably put three past Barcelona at Estadio da Luz. Their great start to the Primeira Liga has also been a signal for other clubs to take a look on their roster.

PSG, Chelsea, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid are all reportedly interested in one of their best players at the moment. However, his €150 million release clause will make these clubs think twice before going after him.

It’s not unusual to see a player who shines in a Champions League game beingimmediately linked with other high-profile clubs. And Benfica’s convincing win over Barca may be another proof of that.

After his impressive performance against the La Liga side, Uruguay international striker Darwin Nuñez has been the subject of many transfer rumors and, according to Record, all the aforementioned clubs have him on their sights.

But Nuñez, 22, is under contract until June 2025 and has a €150 million($173.2m) releaseclause on his deal, which would practically fend off any interest from other teams. Yes, he may have begun the new season with six goals in eight appearances, but that’s a lot of money we’re talking about.

To put it in perspective, it’s way more than the €115m($132.8m) Chelsea paid for Romelu Lukaku this summer and the €117.50 ($135.7m) million Manchester City bagged for Jack Grealish. So, unless Benfica change their minds and are willing to negotiate for a lower fee, it seems unlikely any of these sides will actually satisfy his release clause.
