Spain began their Olympic journey with a goalless draw against Egypt at the Sapporo Dome, but then managed to win 1-0 over Australia in Matchday 2 with a late second-half goal from Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal.

Meanwhile, Argentina started the championship with a 2-0 defeat against Australia but then won 1-0 over Egypt on Sunday. Lens left-back Facundo Medina sealed the deal for La Albiceleste and kept their chances to win a ticket to the next round at Tokyo 2020.
