The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are officially finished, starting the new Olympic cycle until the next edition, Paris 2024. Mexico participated with 164 athletes, their third largest delegation behind the ones from Munich 1972 and Mexico 1968. However, their medal count didn’t end up as expected.

Mexico debuted in the Olympic Games, as a delegation, in Paris 1924, and since then the country has participated in 23 consecutive Games. They have claimed so far, including Tokyo 2020, 73 medals in total, 13 of them gold.

Their best participation in the Olympic Games was in the one the country hosted, Mexico 1968. In that edition, Mexico won nine medals in total: three of gold, three of silver and three of bronze. Here, check out how many medals Mexican athletes won in Tokyo 2020.

Mexico brought home four medals, all bronze. It’s Mexico’s worst Olympic performance since 1996. The nation ended up in the 84th place in the standings, only ahead of nine countries. It’s also the worst performance of any team from Latin America in this edition.

Their most recent medal was from the soccer team, who won 3-1 over Japan in the bronze medal game. It’s the third medal in soccer in the last three Olympics, and only Brazil, who won gold over Spain, has a better performance during that stretch.

Before that, Aremi Fuentes won bronze in women’s weightlifting, Gabriel Agundez and Alejandra Orozco did the same in synchronized diving; and Alejandra Valencia and Luis Alvarez also came third in mixed team archery.

However, there were other prominent names from this Olympics, like gymnast Alexa Moreno, who ended up in fourth place and with an Olympic diploma. The softball team also ended up fourth. On the other hand, Jorge Orozco was the first Mexican to reach a final in shooting, and missed bronze in the men’s trap by five points.
