Chengdu Open 2021: Why has the ATP 250 tournament been canceled?

The Chengdu Open 2021 was expected to take place in late September 2021, but theATP 205 tournament has now been canceled. Here, find out why.

The Chengdu Open is a menโ€™s ATP Tour 250 level tournament held on hard courts in Chengdu, China. It was a brand-new tournament for the 2016 ATP World Tour, replacing the ATP Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.

From September 23 to September 29, it is held at the Sichuan International Tennis Center.It is part of the Asian swing of the Tour. The prize money of the tournament was$1,213,295 in the latest edition in 2019.

The tournament is held in the Sichuan International Tennis Center, which has a 6,500-seat Center Court, two extra 2,000-seat exhibition courts, and 17 peripheral courts. Pablo Carreno Busta took first place in the 2019 competition.

Chengdu Open 2021: Why has the ATP 250 tournament been canceled?

The Chengdu Open, Zhuhai Championships, and Shanghai Masters were the only Asian events left after the China Open and Japan Open were withdrawn from the 2021 calendar. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the cancellation of all three events, despite expectationsthat they would take place in 2021.

As a result, the ATP announced the most recent modifications to its program, as the global impact of the coronavirus pandemic continues to be present. The Rolex Shanghai Masters will not be held in 2021, according to the ATP, marking the second year in a row that the tournament has been postponed due to COVID-19.

All ATP 250 events, including the Chengdu Open and Zhuhai Championships, as well as the Maharashtra Open in Pune, have been canceled. An ATP 250 event will be contested on indoor hard courts in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, from September 20 to 26, as well as an ATP 250 tournament on hard courts at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego from September 27 to October 3.
