Legend Martina Navratilova, winner of 59 Grand Slams between singles, doubles and mixed doubles, has reflected on World No. 2 Iga Swiatek’s slump, sending a strong message to the Polish star ahead of the start of the Miami Open.

The five-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t lifted a trophy since defending her Roland Garros title last June, and she has yet to reach another final since that memorable victory in Paris. Moreover, Swiatek recently spoke out after receiving criticism from fans due to an incident with a ball boy at Indian Wells.

In that sense, Navratilova had some strong words for Swiatek, as she believes the Polish star “should we be concerned” about her lack of titles since last year, as well as the fact that she has “lost her composure a few times this year”.

“She showed moments of frustration and directed some of it toward her team,” Navratilova said to wtatennis.com. “While it’s unclear what was being said, she’ll need to manage those emotions better, as she can be highly agitated at times,” she added.

The legend said that Swiatek “seems to be struggling with confidence, which can lead to frustration when things don’t go her way. Her game is still there, but maintaining a positive mindset will be key.” However, she admitted that the Polish player “has been the most successful player overall for the past few years and has won this event.”

Iga Swiatek’s path in Miami

Iga Swiatek’s path in Miami looks quite similar to the challenge she faced at Indian Wells. She’s set to open against Caroline Garcia, a tricky opponent, before a potential round of 16 meeting with Karolina Muchova — a player who has troubled top seeds in the past.

If Swiatek, who won the tournament in 2022, makes it through those early tests, she could face Australian champion Madison Keys in the quarterfinals, a matchup where she might not be the clear favorite given Keys’ powerful game and home advantage. From there, Jessica Pegula could be waiting in the semifinals, setting up a possible showdown with Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
