Connor McDavid showed that the risk of returning to the Edmonton Oilers’ lineup against the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/st-louis-blues">St. Louis Blues</a> on Wednesday was minimal, after missing the past eight NHL games due to a lower-body injury. His presence was crucial, as the Oilers would have been forced to play two fewer players if their captain hadn’t worn the uniform for the first time since suffering the injury on March 20 against the Winnipeg Jets.



His return was triumphant. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/edmonton-oilers">Oilers</a> captain shone with three assists in the 4-3 win, moving Edmonton closer to securing a spot in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs. Despite significant absences in the lineup, McDavid led with his skill and determination, powering a team that fought hard to earn a vital victory.



“Obviously it was a difficult situation for our group as a whole,” McDavid said according to NHL.com. “Guys coming in and out of the lineup, sick, hurt whatever it is, short numbers so we go with five ‘D.’ It was a gutsy effort by them and it was kind of a crazy day for our group not knowing who is going and whatnot. I was just happy to get in there.”

Despite the uncertainty, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-mcdavid">McDavid</a> saw his return as an opportunity. “I wasn’t taking anyone’s spot, and I thought it was an opportunity,” McDavid said. “If it was no good, you go out, take a couple of shifts and if it’s no good then you come out. I wasn’t taking anyone’s spot and obviously, I felt good and there were no problems.”

With only 11 forwards and five defenders available before McDavid’s return, the decision to have him play was made after morning practice. He ended up logging 20:35 minutes of ice time.

<h2>McDavid makes the difference</h2>



McDavid assisted Connor Brown for the Oilers’ first goal at 1:30 of the second period, had the secondary assist on Vasily Podkolzin‘s goal at 12:39, and then assisted Brown again at 19:39 of the third period for the game-winning goal. With these three assists, he became the seventh player in NHL history with at least five consecutive seasons of 65 assists.



The news that McDavid would play wasn’t confirmed until the Oilers arrived at the arena. “It’s tough, it’s that time of year where there’s not many practices,” he said. “I’ve been skating by myself; I don’t know how many more tight turns I can do before you just have to go. Obviously coming back from injury [stinks] mentally for any athlete, it’s so unpredictable and there are so many variables and things that you can’t account for. It’s nice to get that out of the way mentally.”



“Everyone is on their own path and trying to do what they can to get ready when it’s real,” McDavid added. “Part of that for me is getting into games and feeling the puck and getting into different situations that only a game can provide.”

“[The Jets are] top of the league, right? They’re there for a reason,” Blues captain Brayden Schenn stated postgame, per NHL.com. “They play hard defense, no time and space, good goalie. Second period I thought we got it going there a little bit. And then, obviously in the third [we] gave one up there and had some chances late and weren’t able to capitalize, but onto the next one now and we’re going to go win in Edmonton.”

Talbot, made a spectacular glove save at 1:20 of the first period, denying Pavel Buchnevich on a 3-on-1 break. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/detroit-red-wings">Red Wings‘</a> penalty kill also stepped up, successfully neutralizing both penalties they faced in the opening period. The second period remained scoreless until J.T. Compher broke the deadlock at 5:13 of the third, finishing a cross-ice pass from Jonatan Berggren. With Binnington pulled for an extra skater, the Blues tied the game 1-1 with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation. “We had multiple chances to clear the puck, and we didn’t get it to the net,” McLellan said.

“At the end, [Necas] messes up in the neutral zone, then in the D-zone,” Bednar said postgame, via DNVR Avalanche on X. “I do think there are some things that we can clear up there.”

<h2>Undisciplined</h2>



The Avalanche committed four penalties, against the Blues’ lone undiscplinary action. Granting such opportunities to St. Louis proved costly, as the Avs failed to generate momentum through large stretches of the game. Moreover, Bednar was largely displeased with his team’s penalty killing, issuing a stern message postgame.



“Didn’t like the penalties we took in the third period when you’re trying to come back,” Bednar added. “We made a couple big mistakes, the penalty kill was mistaken in their first goal. Late on in the third period we gave up a couple of pretty good looks from the slot. We were kind of caught in between and no one was talking.”



<h2>Not themselves</h2>



It wasn’t a good game for the Avs’ standards, and defenseman Devon Toews didn’t sugarcoat his thoughts following the deflating loss, that put Colorado further back from the Dallas Stars in their race for second place in the Central Division.

“I can’t remember us being outshot like that in a long time, so credit to St. Louis. We don’t ask either of those things to win us games every night, so once in a while you need that. We got that tonight, particularly the power play.”

According to Andy Strickland, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/toronto-maple-leafs">Toronto Maple Leafs</a> were the strongest suitor for Schenn, but they have yet to take any concrete steps. “Toronto has the pieces to make a deal for Brayden Schenn but as of now haven’t put a package together to make it work,” Strickland wrote on his personal X account.



Even more reassuring for Blues fans, Strickland’s sources have indicated that a trade to Toronto is highly improbable. “Told, at this point, a deal with the Maple Leafs is unlikely. Could change, but as of now doubtful,” he added. Schenn has been a key part of St. Louis’ roster since joining the team in 2017.



Earlier in February, Spittin’ Chiclets had reported that both the Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights were keeping an eye on Schenn. However, that speculation ultimately fizzled out, proving to be nothing more than a rumor.
