In one of the most heated matchups of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/march-madness">March Madness</a> so far, the Florida Gators delivered a devastating blow to the UConn Huskies, sending them back to Mansfield empty-handed. After the breathtaking matchup, Huskies head coach Dan Hurley dropped a fiery statement, aiming at the NCAA officials.



The highly-anticipated clash between the West Region’s No. 1 and No. 8 seed didn’t disappoint, as the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida">Gators</a> and Huskies put on a show for fans at Lenovo Center and watching at home. Ultimately, the top seed in the West prevailed, but Hurley and the Huskies made them work for it, giving them a run for their money.



The Huskies won’t take home the glory for their hard-fought effort, as they had their sights set on advancing to the Sweet Sixteen and, most importantly, chasing a threepeat after championships in 2023 and 2024. Hurley was clearly caught up in the heat of the moment when he delivered his blunt statement shortly after the buzzer sounded, marking the end of his program’s March Madness hopes. However, during his media availability afterward, the seven-year coach in Mansfield offered a cool-headed admission.



“Part of [the emotion] is probably just the season, how tumultuous the season has been. The team battled and fought just to qualify for the tournament, and then how the game played out, up three at the last media [timeout] we have two free throw rebound mistakes,” Hurley explained. “With past teams we’ve had issues like that occur but those games we were up 15-18 so they weren’t as magnified.

“And obviously the Karaban drive on the baseline, you know, there was a lot of contact there and we were up one I think at that point or two potentially. I thought that was a big play too.”

It takes a lot to find success as a <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball </a>coach. It’s not just about Xs and Os or even getting the best recruits; you’re also preparing young men and women for life.



That’s one of the reasons why Geno Auriemma has found that much success during his lifelong tenure in charge of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team.



With that in mind, he shared his thoughts on the biggest changes and improvements he’s seen from her superstar, Paige Bueckers, ahead of what might be her final shot at a National Championship.

“The coaching is less at this time than it was as a freshman because her freshman year, it was all new,” Auriemma said. “There’s an excitement and a newness to the NCAA tournament, and the fact that we were able to go to the NCAA tournament during her freshman year, got to the final four, and be in the bubble, which was not great.”

Now, the coach acknowledged that Bueckers is much more knowledgeable and, more than that, she’s also grown to become a leader who can help the younger players who were once in her position.



“But that whole year was mostly about trying to get Paige to understand what college basketball is and what’s in store down the road. Now she knows the drill she knows exactly what’s coming ahead of her I think more of getting her to apply what she’s learned to the other players on the floor that don’t have the same level of experience,“ the coach added.

Bueckers has been spectacular again this season, averaging 19.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game on 53.6% from the floor. And while she’s still eligible to return for another year, that doesn’t seem likely.

The USC Trojans, as expected, are the No. 1 team entering the Big Dance. JuJu Watkins and company have been excellent this season, and they deserved to get the nod.



Anything can happen in a win-or-go-home situation. That’s why Watkins will have to do plenty of heavy lifting to make sure her team stays alive in their pursuit of a championship.



Notably, she will square off vs. some elite competition. That’s why, when asked about whether she wanted another meeting with Paige Bueckers and UConn, she didn’t run from the smoke.

Watkins and USC took down the then-No. 1 UConn 72-7 earlier in the season. It was the first time the Trojans took down the Huskies in player history, and it was partly thanks to Watkins’ 25 points. Bueckers had 22 for Geno Auriemma’s team.

Hurley talked about how much the college sports picture has changed because of the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) era and so many players looking to change programs: 



“Well, I mean, look at the volatility this year, the level of volatility in college sports. This has now become a year-to-year proposition, the game has changed completely,“ he said



At the end of the day, the programs will have to either adapt or perish, and it’s not like big programs didn’t benefit from their status in the past. This is now everybody else leveling up the field.

“There are two ways that a senior can go,” Auriemma said. “They can either be panicking or stressed about what’s coming next, or they can relish in the moment, make the most of it and have the final say. Let’s hope it keeps going the way of the latter, but that’s what she is right now.”

While his demeanor has often rubbed people the wrong way, no one can deny his impact on the program. That’s why even the Los Angeles Lakers tried to steal him away.



However, it seems like he’s not that impressed by the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a>. In a recent interview with CBS Sports, the controversial coach revealed that he tries to emulate European programs instead.

“Most colleges are stealing ball screen, offensive ideas from the NBA. Whereas, for us it was taking off-ball movement, less dribbling, more passing, more cutting, more screening that would represent more of a European professional model,“ Hurley said.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t necessarily worked out well for them this year. They’re not a strong candidate to get the job done in the NCAA Tournament after a subpar season.

Then again, they call it March Madness for a reason, and if history has taught us something, it is to never count out Dan Hurley and his UConn Huskies, regardless of the situation.

Throughout the course of his career, Dan Hurley’s demeanor has rubbed plenty of people the wrong way. However, no one can deny that he’s one of the most successful coaches in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a>.



Over the past couple of years, there has been a bit of a myth surrounding him and his orange bottle. Fans online started a theory that stated that whenever he drank from it, UConn got into epic runs and didn’t lose a game.



There was a long-going debate about the content of said bottle. Some argued that it was no ordinary sports drink, and Hurley finally decided to put an end to all speculation.

“I just took a sip of my p**s,” Hurley jokingly told Hurley Mania before claryfing what was his drink of choice. “So now I go like, about 90 minutes before game, I tip off, I go mushroom coffee with a little MCT. Brain octane into the coffee, you know, just to get that extra advantage over whoever I’m coaching against. And then during the game, I’ll go with a bulletproof Mentalist blend.”

For those who aren’t aware, MCT stands for medium-chain triglyceride, which is an oil annd mushroom coffee pro athletes choose to maintain energy levels and boost concentration and cognitive function. 



Well, whatever works for him. He’s led the Huskies to back-to-back national titles, so if it isn’t worked, then he shouldn’t fix it, and superstition also plays a big part in sports.

That’s why, even though she’s firmly expected to be the first-overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, she can only think of one thing right now, and that’s finishing the job.

“I think we’re growing every single day. Like my other years here at college, the coaches do an amazing job preparing us for whatever is going to come our way,” Bueckers said. “They won 11 national titles so they know what it looks like.”

“Obviously, very excited,” Bueckers said when asked about her mindset. “This is what you prepare for your whole entire life, whole entire season. I don’t know. I’m just excited. March is great. Playing during this time is great.We just want to continue to keep getting better and keep looking forward to the future.”

Also, with a future WNBA star like Paige Bueckers leading the way, the Huskies have become must-watch television. Even so, coach Auriemma isn’t that impressed with his superstar.



Following his team’s win over Marquette, the hard-hitting coach called out Bueckers for looking devasted after one missed free-throw, even though she already had 19 points, eight assists, and was close to winning another conference title.

“I thought it was a little maybe it’s because it’s Oscar night it’s a little overdramatic. I thought it was a little much the reaction to missing the free throw I just turned around (and) started talking to my staff,” Auriemma said.

Notably, that’s pretty much the entire opposite from what he had said about his superstar guard in the past, as he had praised her for being a little ‘delusional’ at times:



“There’s a delusional side of Paige that I love,” Auriemma said. “‘(Paige says) I have never missed a shot; if I do miss, it’s because something happened. I have never fouled anybody in my life; the refs are always wrong.’ So there’s always this back-and-forth between me and her because I know what kids want.”

She’s joined a long list of legendary players who thrived under coach Geno Auriemma, such as Swin Cash, Breanna Stewart, Maya Moore, Sue Bird, and, of course, Diana Taurasi.



Tauris just retired from the WNBA, while Bueckers is on her way to the league. With that in mind, she recalled an epic story about how Taurasi pushed her to be the player she is nowadays.



<h2>Diana Taurasi once chose JuJu Watkins over Paige Bueckers</h2>



Back in 2022, during the Final Four, someone asked Diana Taurasi to pick a player for her pickup team. Instead of going with Bueckers as most people expected, she took USC star JuJu Watkins.

<h2>Bueckers confronted Diana Taurasi</h2>



It didn’t take long before that clip found its way to Bueckers. She then reached out to her fellow Huskie and confronted Taurasi for not choosing her. The WNBA legend, however, was playing chess, not checkers:



“I saw the video, and I was like, ‘All right, bro, I see what you’re doing. You picked JuJu over me. What’s up with that? You told me you had my back, it was me over everybody,’” Buekcers recalled. ” And she was like, ‘Yeah, dog, I just did that to motivate you. It’s all motivation.&apos;”

Needless to say, it worked. While Watkins will most likely be the top player in college once Bueckers is gone, Bueckers is now one of the greatest players in program history and is projected to be the first player taken in the 2025 WNBA Draft. That’s why when the veterans talk, we should all listen.

Most coaches would’ve been more than happy when their best player excels. However, Geno Auriemma has proven over and over that he’s not like the average coach.



The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> legend showed his true colors again after the UConn Huskies’ big win over Butler. Paige Bueckers had another big performance, but her coach was unfazed.



When asked about Bueckers’ strong game, the legendary coach actually called her out for not being where he wanted her to be. Of course, it was all in good spirits.

“She’s never where I want her to be,” Auriemma laughingly said during the halftime interview. “You know I think there’s always a little bit more (Bueckers can do).”

Bueckers had scored 17 of her team’s 42 points at that point in the game. She had as many first-half points as the entire Butler team, but it wasn’t enough for coach Auriemma.

Even so, he’s still an authorized voice to discuss hoops, and when he speaks, we all listen. That’s why he wanted to put the world on notice by deeming St. John’s as a sneaky pick to make some noise in the tournament.

“They’re elite,” he said. “They’ve got a championship-level defense. They’ve got championship-level offensive rebounding and, obviously, how their season goes from here – in large part – is going to come down to being able to make enough shots from the perimeter. If they shoot the ball like that from the perimeter, they’re going to be a problem for anyone.”

The defending national champions found out about all of that the hard way. They couldn’t keep up with the No. 10 Johnnies during an 89-75 loss at Madison Square Garden.

Paige Bueckers continues to make history. She scored 23 points in the 91-49 win over Seton Hall to pass WNBA legend Diana Taurasi and become No. 9 on UConn’s all-time scoring list.



Bueckers is one of the biggest sensations in all of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a>. That’s also why everybody sounded off the alarms when she went to the locker room, hobbling after apparently hurting her knee.



She already has a torn ACL in her medical record, and she sprained that same knee earlier in the season. Fortunately, she was able to get back on the court after halftime, and she later took to social media to clear the air on her status.

“I’m alright, I’m alright,” Bueckers responded on X when asked about her condition.

The Huskies are a deep team, and they’re far from a one-player show. Then again, as much as they have resources to get by without Bueckers, it would be a shame to see her go down.

This might be his final season in college before turning pro, and with all the talk about her being one of the few greats in program history without a national championship win, she will definitely push through everything to be on the court.
