The 2024-25 NHL season has been a rollercoaster for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/vancouver-canucks">Vancouver Canucks</a>, and the biggest drop may still lie ahead for the organization in British Columbia. The Canucks need their star players to step up consistently, and many point to Elias Pettersson’s lackluster year as a major factor in the team’s recent inefficiency. However, the Swedish forward has grown tired of the constant questioning.



Emotions have been high all season long, and calmness is at a premium for Rick Tocchet’s side as they fight for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Western Conference. Pettersson has been under heavy scrutiny all season long, as his reported animosity with former teammate J.T. Miller was one of the hottest topics of discussion in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> this campaign.



Ultimately, the Canucks moved on from Miller, who returned to the New York Rangers. While no one in Vancouver will—or can—admit that the feud with Pettersson played a significant role in the trade, the signs seem to be there.



However, Pettersson has yet to find a rhythym since Miller left the locker room, and after the 4 Nations break, as he didn’t meet expectations in the best-on-best tournament either. After a close 2-1 defeat against the Utah Hockey Club, Pettersson (whose last goal was over a month ago on Jan. 22) issued a blunt answer during his media availability.

“It’s more annoying dealing with the media,” Canucks forward Elias Pettersson said, when asked whether confidence is a factor when struggling to score by a Sportsnet reporter.

<h2>Tocchet’s wake-up call to Pettersson</h2>



The Canucks signed Pettersson to an eight-year contract extension in March 2024, paying the 26-year-old $11.6 million annually through the 2031-32 season. Vancouver would certainly love to get something in return for their money’s worth, but since putting pen to paper, Pettersson has been more linked to off-ice issues than on-ice production.



All the noise around the locker room has undoubtedly been affecting Pettersson’s performance, and Coach Tocchet would like his star player to regain his confidence. Tocchet has noticed Pettersson second-guessing every decision he makes on the ice.

“I think he’s waiting for something. I don’t know if it’s a lack of confidence in his shot, but as soon as he has room, he’s got to take it and just got to blast it,” Rick Tocchet admitted after the 2-1 loss at Utah, via Sportsnet. “I’d rather him just rip a puck right now. He’s not moving his feet. I thought today, some shifts he was moving his feet and it looked like we had some glimpses. I don’t know if it’s a mental block right now, all year, but he’s got to move his feet.”



<h2>Season letdown</h2>



Coming off an impressive point production during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, Pettersson’s current campaign has been quite disappointing. During the last two seasons, he had registered 102 and 89 points, respectively.

However, Pettersson’s production took a significant hit this year, as he has registered just 35 points (11 G, 24 A) through 51 games. At this scoring pace, the Canucks’ alternate captain is projected to finish the season with 56 points (17 G, 39 A)—far from what Vancouver envisioned when handing him a lucrative contract extension in the spring of 2024.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-kane">Patrick Kane</a> couldn’t be more relieved after returning from an injury that kept him off the ice for five long games. The Detroit Red Wings won in a tight game, but managed to edge past the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in OT. Kane spoke after the game, and his voice revealed the need for such close games.



According to Kane’s statements after the game against the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/vancouver-canucks">Canucks</a>, where he spent 18:19 minutes on ice, he admitted that he knew the game was going to be tough, saying, “We knew it was going to be a little bit of a grind,” but the Red Wings found a way to get it done despite the difficulty, “We found a way to get it done. Obviously, you need wins like that when you’re not at your best.”



It’s worth noting that Kane missed five games due to an upper-body injury, with his last game being on January 22 during a 2-1 road loss to the Flyers. He hadn’t played 18 or more minutes since January 18, when he did so against Tampa Bay.

McDavid was ejected from the game, and chaos broke out as everybody on the ice looked for a dance partner. Ultimately, 12 penalties were handed out because of the pandemonium that broke loose at Rogers Arena. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.”

Despite a strong start to their campaign, the Broadway Blueshirts haven’t come close to being the best show in The Great White Way. In hopes of lighting a fire under the team, according to reports, New York offered a blockbuster trade to the Vancouver Canucks, but the latter turned it down.



The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/vancouver-canucks">Canucks</a> and the Rangers have been linked in trade talks all season long. Along with the buzz surrounding a rift between stars J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, the locker room in Vancouver has been through much drama this campaign, and the results though not terrible, haven’t been as great as expected.



The Rangers have been the biggest letdown of the 2024-25 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season, as Peter Laviolette’s team has failed to replicate—or even come close to—their form from last year, when they won the Presidents’ Trophy. New York sits closer to the league’s basement than its attic. 



Fans in The City of Dreams believe a trade for a big name in the market could be just what the doctor ordered. And, apparently, the front office thought likewise, as they sent a blockbuster trade offer to the Canucks.

However, Vancouver said no. Per reporter Josh Yohe, the Rangers offered a one-for-one groundbreaking deal sending Mika Zibanejad to Vancouver, in exchange for J.T. Miller. According to this report, General Manager Chris Drury hoped to repatriate Miller back to NYC, where he played his first six NHL seasons.

<h2>Different standing points</h2>



While Yohe states this trade offer took place earlier in the season, plenty has changed in short notice. Vancouver’s drama surrounding Miller and Pettersson is the talk of the town, and the organization may be looking to quiet the noise by shipping one of them away. 



From New York’s perspective, Zibanejad’s production has taken a significant hit, and the Rangers may be open to adding another piece to the offer, hoping to tip the scales and convince Vancouver to agree to the trade.



However, there is one major roadblock that cannot be overlooked: Zibanejad has a no-move clause (NMC) in his contract, and the Swede would have to waive it for New York to trade him out of Manhattan. And based Zibanejad’s recent comments, he has no interest in changing his address.



“I don’t read anything, I don’t listen to anything. It’s noise,” Zibanejad stated, via The Athletic. “There’s a reason why there are clauses like that. It’s something that was negotiated and earned. My focus has always been here. My focus has never been on anything else.”

<h2>Non-stop headache for Laviolette</h2>



In addition to the constant noise and chaos surrounding the franchise in the city that never sleeps, Laviolette is facing significant challenges within the locker room. Star goaltender Igor Shesterkin is dealing with an injury and has missed time, while forward Chris Kreider has now been placed on IR, ruling him out for at least the Rangers’ next three games.

After another deflating loss, the answer to the Rangers struggles could be in a trade for Vancouver Canucks star J.T. Miller. However, Peter Laviolette won’t get his hopes up after learning of discouraging news from an insider.



New York fell 7-4 to Washington and witnessed firsthand the negative effect Igor Shesterkin’s absence has on the team. Despite Jonathan Quick’s good effort, it wasn’t enough to withstand the Capitals’ firepower. However, mostly to blame are the team’s skaters, not their goalie. The Rangers were outplayed, as has been their common trend throughout the 2024-25 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season.



The puck won’t bounce the Rangers’ way, due in part to sheer luck but also because of self-inflicted wounds. It made sense for the Rangers to be one of the teams knocking on the Canucks’ door. However, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has some bad news that may discourage <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/peter-laviolette">Laviolette</a> and the Rangers from pursuing a blockbuster trade involving J.T. Miller in exchange for K’Andre Miller and/or Mika Zibanejad.

<h2>Zibanejad speaks on trade buzz</h2>



The 31-year-old Mika Zibanejad has had a very underwhelming first half of the season. Fans in the Big Apple have taken out their frustration on Zibanejad, actively calling for the team to trade the Swedish forward. However, Zibanejad has a no-move clause (NMC) in his contract, making it unlikely he would waive it.



“I haven’t heard anything,” Zibanejad told The Athletic. “I don’t read anything, I don’t listen to anything. It’s noise. There’s a reason why there are clauses like that. It’s something that was negotiated and earned. My focus has always been here. My focus has never been on anything else.”



Through 38 games played this season, Zibanejad tallies 8 goals and 13 assists for a total of 23 points. His depleted production led to Laviolette replacing him off the first power play unit.

The reports of J.T. Miller’s conflict with Elias Pettersson have transcended the Vancouver Canucks’ locker room, and every <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> franchise is looking closely at the situation. While the two players have defused the situation, many are still wary of the drama. Former Canucks captain, now New York Islanders star Bo Horvat weighed in and made something clear about the rumors.



The buzz around the building in British Columbia may have been hyperbolized, though it’s presence is evident. Former <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/vancouver-canucks">Canucks</a> head coach Bruce Boudreau first signaled it, and now Horvat has offered an honest comment on it.



Many around the league are heavily interested as the potential rift could lead to one of the big names in Vancouver to be shipped out. Horvat stepped in and delivered a neutral statement.



“It’s definitely [been blown out of proportion],” Horvat stated, via The Hockey News. “It’s always a tough market that way. Any little piece of information gets magnified in those situations, right? But I mean, that comes with the territory. It comes with playing there. That’s what Vancouver is all about, is the Canucks. So every little thing that’s going on in that dressing room or going on with the team, it’s gonna get magnified.”

Horvat played nine seasons in Vancouver and was appointed team captain in 2019. During his tenure with the Canucks, Horvat registered 420 points (201 goals, 219 assists) in 621 games.

<h2>Horvat opens up on relationship with Miller</h2>



Horvat was named the Canucks’ captain in 2019, the same year Vancouver traded for J.T. Miller with the Tampa Bay Lightning. As the leader of the group, Horvat had to keep everyone in the locker room at bay.



“Miller and I got along great. There’s gonna be times when you’re gonna cuss each other out. There’s gonna be times when you’re not gonna like somebody, but at the same time, you respect everybody,” Horvat said. “You’re all friends in there, you’re all teammates, and you’re all fighting towards the same goal. Are you gonna get along all the time? No, but at the same time, he and I had a good relationship. Same with me and [Pettersson]”.



<h2>Horvat’s departure</h2>



While Horvat intended to stay with the Canucks, General Manager Patrick Allvin found himself at a crossroads as he had to choose between extending Horvat or Miller. Ultimately, he opted for the 31-year-old center, and Horvat was traded to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-islanders">Islanders</a> on January 2023.

“Honestly, the way it was all handled is what I was most upset about,” Horvat stated, via The Hockey News. “They said one thing, and they did the complete opposite. It’s just frustrating when you are told one thing, and the opposite happens. That’s not to say I’m not happy where I am right now. Obviously, I love Long Island, love being here, and I’m happy to be here, but, yeah, just the way it was all handled rubbed me the wrong way.”

Everybody in Manhattan has a price tag for the team’s General Manager, and he has made that clear to the players. As the Blueshirts struggle, a trade could be the missing piece for New York’s haphazard puzzle.



While Vancouver is not in such a needy position as New York, they could use some blueline help, and the Rangers may have a player for the Canucks. K’Andre Miller is a big defenseman who is pivotal for the Rangers’ PK, but his offensive production woes may drive him out of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/peter-laviolette">Laviolette’s</a> team in NYC. Miller is a pending RFA after this season.



In exchange, the Rangers could work out a trade for Vancouver center J.T. Miller. Miller is a gutsy player who could provide a spark for the crestfallen locker room in New York. J.T. Miller could be headed for the exit in Vancouver after a statement from former <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/vancouver-canucks">Canucks</a> coach Bruce Boudreau.

Boudreau stated Miller was estranged with fellow center Elias Pettersson. With the Canucks’ season on the line, the front office could decide to ship one of the dueling stars if the situation continues to escalate. It would be a risky move for both sides, but with the Rangers desperate for solutions, they might just be willing to take the chance.

Though both J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson denied the reported rift between them, drama is starting to bubble up within the Canucks’ organization. Vancouver got off to a strong start this season, but has since slowed down before the Christmas break, with many pointing to a suspected division in the locker room as the cause.



<h2>Boudreau’s comments on Miller and Pettersson</h2>



Boudreau joined the Canucks midway through the 21-22 season and was fired after 46 games in the 22-23 campaign. Boudreau failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs during his stay in British Columbia. During a radio interview, the former Canucks’ coach opened up on the relationship between Miller and Pettersson.



“It is a problem, and I knew they had a little bit of a problem between them before I got there,” Boudreau stated, via OverDrive. “But I thought that was all straightened out and everything. So, I’m hoping it was a coincidence.



“If there’s a rift in the locker room, it’s up to the coach in all of these situations. I know the coach is the easy one to move but it’s up to him to read the room, and if something is wrong, to fix it and to fix the room and bring the guys in and talk to them about it.”

<h2>Miller and Pettersson shut down the rumors</h2>



Although the rumors about Miller and Pettersson’s conflicted relationship have been loud in Vancouver for quite some time, both players set the record straight recently.

Although both stars have made it clear there’s no divide in the locker room, the New York Rangers, along with other NHL teams, will be watching closely as the situation in Vancouver unfolds. The Boston Bruins walked into Rogers Arena and handed the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/vancouver-canucks">Vancouver Canucks</a> a whooping 5-1 loss. The Canucks had no answers for Brad Marchand and the Bruins as they cruised to victory. Vancouver was held scoreless until the third period where they cut the lead down to 5-1 but couldn’t build on it. After the crushing defeat, Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet sent a straightforward message to his team.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/boston-bruins">Boston</a> got back on the win column after two embarrassing losses to kickstart their five-game roadtrip. The Bruins needed a big win to regain momentum and they did just that against the Canucks.

“Let’s face facts here, four or five guys, they’re struggling. They’re struggling to get emotionally invested in the game, and that’s my job, to get these guys (invested). This is a game, a sport, the NHL, where you have to be jacked up to play the game. You have to be emotionally in the game. “We needed to respond in here tonight, and we did it in a big way tonight,” Sacco said, per NHL.com. “It was just a solid team effort.
