Serena Williams is taking on a new role in the sports world, this time as part of the ownership group for a WNBA team. The tennis great, who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, is joining the Toronto Tempo, the league’s latest expansion franchise set to debut in 2026. The team announced her involvement on Monday.
Williams shared her enthusiasm for the opportunity, emphasizing her commitment to supporting women’s sports. “I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” she said in a statement.
“This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes. I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry (Tanenbaum) and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy,” she added.
On the other hand, the franchise confirmed that Williams will contribute to the team’s branding and merchandise efforts, playing a role in jersey designs and exclusive merchandise collaborations. She will help shape the visual identity of the Tempo as they prepare for their inaugural season.

The Tempo is owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by Larry Tanenbaum, who also serves as chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE). MLSE owns several major sports franchises, including the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs. Tanenbaum is also the NBA’s board of governors chairman, giving the new WNBA team a strong leadership foundation.
