The New York Liberty‘s strong run in the current WNBA season becomes even more impressive considering they’ve been without Jonquel Jones on the court in recent games. Head coach Sandy Brondello, the mastermind on the sideline, is hoping to have her star back soon to further elevate the team’s performance.
Back on June 19, during a matchup against the Mercury, Jones aggravated an ankle injury and has since been sidelined, supporting her teammates from the bench.
Due to this situation, and according to WNBA insider Madeline Kenney via her official X account (formerly Twitter), the Mercury head coach hopes to have her star player back in the lineup in the near future.
“If we can get her back after All-Star break, that’s still a win, isn’t it? B/c it was supposed to be in August,” Brondello stated via @madkenney.

Head coach Sandy Brondello of the New York Liberty hugs Jonquel Jones #35 after she won the MVP trophy following the team’s 82-63 victory over the Las Vegas Aces in the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup Championship game at Michelob ULTRA Arena on August 15, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
What happened to Jones?
Jonquel Jones of the Liberty recently re-aggravated a prior ankle injury during the game against the Phoenix Mercury. This setback has clearly impacted the team’s performance, as the Liberty have managed only two wins in their five subsequent games.

The absence of Jones has been felt on both ends of the court, contributing to the Liberty’s periodic struggles since her injury. Her recovery will be crucial for the team to regain their previous form and consistency.
A long-awaited return
Leonie Fiebich has rejoined the New York Liberty after representing Germany in the EuroBasket tournament. Her return is a welcome boost for the team, which had a challenging period while she was away.
She quickly reassumed her role in the starting lineup, and the Liberty celebrated her comeback with an important victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. Her defensive presence and versatility are key to the team’s performance as they continue their season.
