“Three in a row has a nice ring to it!“ That was how utilty player Kiké Hernandez announced that he has re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the 2026 MLB season. One of the largest sagas in free agency has been settled now.
Hernandez is a key part of the Dodgers and he is back. After leaving the team, the Dodgers taded for him in 2023 to get him back. After that, they’ve won two straight World Series titles and have re-signed Hernandez three times as well.
This is not the only re-signed player for the Dodgers, though it’s the most awaited one. Kiké is back but the Dodgers signed also signed a utility player back in the start of free agency. However, Ryan Fitzgerald is not Kiké. He is good, but Kiké’s status with the Dodgers goes well above what he is as a player. He has turned into an icon as well.
Hernandez is likely to miss opening day
Noah Camras of Sports Illustrated reported that Hernandez is expected to miss opening day and start the season on the 60-day injured list. The utility player announced that he underwent a left-elbow surgery to repair damage that he played through in the 2025 MLB season.
Also, the Dodgers have a full 40-man roster, but by using the 60-day injured list, they can open up a roster spot once the pitchers and catchers officially report to camp. Kiké was a key part of the team, especially duing the postseason run.
Hernandez provides clutch, versatile play for the Dodgers
Last year, Hernandez played 28 games as an outfielder, 28 at first base, 27 at third base, 18 at second base, and two as designated hitter. The postseason saw him line up at right field. However, with the addition of Kyle Tucker, Hernandez might be lined up elsewhere. Hernandez slashed .255/.366/.621 in 2025.
