The Los Angeles Lakers are one win away from tying the Boston Celtics with 17th NBA Championships, the most in the history of the league. Led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, they’ve been the team to beat since the start of the season.
The Lakers have surely lived up to the hype and expectations around them. They’ve put together a suffocating, physical defense, and their offense – although stagnant at times – has been efficient enough to put them in this position.
Then again, they have arguably the best problem any team could ask for. They have two incredibly dominant superstars that have performed at a superlative level and we just don’t know who should win the Finals MVP award, assuming they beat the Miami Heat.
That’s why ESPN’s Rachel Nichols had to take it to a guy who sure knows a thing or two about winning NBA Championships: Scottie Pippen, who didn’t hesitate to give his pick for this year’s Finals MVP.
Scottie Pippen Chooses LeBron James As Finals MVP
“The whole team (should be Finals MVP)for being in that damn Bubble. But, I have to take my hat off to LeBron James,” Pippen started.“To be able to fuel the fire that he’s running with right now, it’s amazing. 17 years in the league. Leading his team in numerous categories. You know, his leadership, his will, his dominance, like how is he still doing this at 17 years in the league? What’s still motivating him? You know, he’s my clear choice,” he concluded.
LeBron James is averaging roughly 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists per game on 53% shooting during the Finals, and even though Anthony Davis has had a couple of impressive performances, he’s also been MIA during some stretches, especially in Game 3.
Then again, it goes without saying that the Lakers still need to finish the job. The Miami Heat aren’t going to down without a fight and they’ve proven to be able of givingthem a lot of trouble, especially with Bam Adebayo back on the lineup.
We’ve already seen teams blow a 3-1 lead in the playoffs this year, so theLakers must be completely locked in if they want to lift their 17th banner, regardless of who ends up winning the Finals MVP award.
