The Dallas Cowboys just can’t catch a break. Right when they thought that they’d be a contender after years of underperforming under Jason Garrett, their defense decides to take the year off, and to make things even worst, they lose Dak Prescott to a season-ending injury.

Prescott was playing at an MVP level and was the only reason why the Cowboys were able to win at least one game before his gruesome ankle injury, and it was pretty clear that they would struggle without him under center.

However, nobody, not even the most pessimistic fan, ever thought that the guy responsible for their struggles would be Ezekiel Elliott, one of the best running backs in the NFL and their best offensive player.

Unfortunately for the former Buckeye, Elliott fumbled twice vs. the Arizona Cardinals on his team’s first game without Prescott, leading to a tough 38-10 home loss and taking their record to just 2-4.

Ezekiel Elliott Takes The Blame For Loss Vs. Arizona Cardinals

That’s why Elliott didn’t hesitate to take the blame for the loss, claiming that playing without Dak Prescott shouldn’t be an excuse for underperforming that way and that it didn’t have anything to do with his fumbles:

“I don’t think we can use that as an excuse. I’m just going to keep saying it over and over. I started the game out with two fumbles, gave the ball away and that gave them all the momentum they needed to go and take off. I want to say I’m sorry, and this one is one me. I need to be better for this team,” Elliott told the media.

Elliott gave up a lot of touches to Tony Pollard and finished the game with just 12 rushes for 49 yards, adding 8 receptions for 31 yards. Moreover, it was pretty clear that Andy Dalton still has a ways to go before being trusted with Mike McCarthy’s offense.

There are a lot of questions going forward in the season for the Dallas Cowboys. They can’t seem to get stops and perhaps it would be for the best to make a move or two to improve their defense and focus on next season with a fully healthy Dak Prescott.
