The San Francisco 49ers didn’t have a great 2024 NFL season. For that reason, the NFC West club has added several weapons to become a contender again—but one of Brock Purdy’s new teammates is set to be unavailable at the start of the upcoming campaign.
Last year, the 49ers went from top contenders to a major disappointment. The team struggled with several injuries, which had a direct impact on its performance.
However, San Francisco is determined to turn things around this year. The front office has brought in new players to compete for the division, yet one of them is already set to miss time at the beginning of the season.
Report: 49ers to lose new wide receiver at the start of the 2025 season
The 49ers are currently making several roster moves to trim down to 53 players before the season opener. While the team boasts a strong offense, they’ve added even more weapons this offseason.
With Deebo Samuel’s departure, San Francisco has been actively looking for a new WR2 to pair with Brandon Aiyuk. Jauan Jennings appears to be the frontrunner for the role, but other names are also in the mix.
Just weeks ago, the 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Demarcus Robinson. He spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Rams, so he’s familiar with the competition in the NFC West.
Unfortunately, his debut with San Francisco may be delayed. On Thursday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports reported that Demarcus Robinson is expected to be suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
While the specific substance has not been disclosed, a three-game suspension suggests it was a relatively minor infraction. Still, it’s a setback for Brock Purdy, who was hoping to have all his new weapons available from the start of the season.
