A few days ago, Jerry Jones said he had to “pinch himself” for having acquired Joe Milton in a trade with the New England Patriots. However, at least in the preseason, the young quarterback has fallen far short of meeting expectations with the Dallas Cowboys.
In the game against the Baltimore Ravens, Milton completed 9 of 18 passes for 122 yards with one interception and several hesitant moments. Despite that, head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s message is clear: absolute confidence in his player.
“I wouldn’t say I’m concerned. We didn’t get into rhythm offensively. It wasn’t just Joe. I mean, we have to be able to run the ball better. Got to take care of the football. He throws the ball with a lot of tempo. Sometimes, you need somebody to help you make a play and I don’t think we did a great job of that.”
Who is the backup QB for the Cowboys?
Brian Schottenheimer said at the end of training camp that he still didn’t have a backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Now, this was his response after the game against the Ravens, confirming that Joe Milton has not earned that role. A lot of uncertainty in a QB room led by Dak Prescott.
“I feel like I don’t have to decide anything today. We’re going to keep letting these guys practice. We have to. All these position battles, we don’t have to decide anything now.”
If Joe Milton doesn’t secure the backup starting job, that would open the door for Will Grier to move up the depth chart. It’s important to remember that the Cowboys lost Cooper Rush, who now plays for the Baltimore Ravens.
