It’s a time of great movement in the NFL, as most teams are slowly starting to finalize their rosters. The Jacksonville Jaguars are no exception, which is why they made headlines by signing a new backup QB for Trevor Lawrence.
Finally, joining the team of newly appointed head coach Liam Coen is none other than Nick Mullens of the Minnesota Vikings. The experienced QB has agreed to a two-year deal with the Jaguars.
The news was confirmed by NFL insider Mike Garafolo, who, through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, provided more details about the agreement between Mullens and the Jacksonville franchise.
“The #Jaguars have agreed to terms with QB Nick Mullens on a two-year, $6.5 million deal with $3 million guaranteed, source says. The new backup to Trevor Lawrence, Mullens goes from Minnesota to Jacksonville along with new Jags assistant Grant Udinski,” Garafolo stated via @MikeGarafolo.
Last season, while Lawrence was sidelined for several weeks due to injuries and even a serious concussion, it was former Patriots QB Mac Jones who filled in as his replacement. Now, Coen will have another option to choose from when it comes to finding a potential successor for the former Clemson star.
Mullens’ extensive experience
Mullens entered the NFL in 2017 despite not being drafted by any team. His first experience was with the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent three years.
In 2021, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad, where he stayed for a short time before moving on to the Cleveland Browns’ roster that same year. In 2022, he signed with the Raiders’ practice squad, eventually landing with the Minnesota Vikings.
Although his arrival to the Jaguars doesn’t indicate he will have an active role given Lawrence’s presence, his experience after several years in the league can bring a lot to the roster.
More moves for the Jaguars
Mullens’ arrival in Jacksonville was not the only move during this free agency period. According to reports from Michael DiRocco via his official X account, several players have joined Liam Coen’s roster.
“The Jaguars have reached agreements with TEs Hunter Long and Johnny Mundt and CB Eric Murray, per a league source. Five players added so far today with CB Jourdan Lewis and QB Nick Mullens earlier,” the reporter stated via @ESPNdirocco.
