Aaron Rodgers‘ future remains uncertain, but some of his former teammates are also searching for new teams. Among them is a linebacker who played alongside him with the Jets and could be an ideal backup if the San Francisco 49ers fail to re-sign Dre Greenlaw.
According to a report from Matt Maiocco, the 49ers could dive deep into free agency in search of reinforcements, and one potential target is linebacker Jamien Sherwood. Sherwood, who played with Rodgers in New York, had an impressive individual season with the Jets.
San Francisco has yet to reach an agreement with Greenlaw, and if his price tag becomes too high, Sherwood could emerge as an alternative. “That could be someone to keep an eye on if the price is less than what it would cost to get Dre Greenlaw,” Maiocco noted.
Sherwood’s last NFL salary with the Jets was $1,143,714, which makes him a really cheap superstar player. With an offer much lower than what they could offer Dre Greenlaw, it’s likely that they won’t just get a good player but also someone younger.
Sherwood’s stats with the Jets
Jamien Sherwood’s performance with the New York Jets from 2021 to 2024 showcases his development and versatility on the field. In his rookie season (2021), appearing in 5 games with 4 starts, recording 15 tackles and a 6.3% missed tackle rate.
Over the next two seasons, he transitioned to linebacker, playing in all 17 games each year, with his 2023 season highlighting his growth as he recorded 46 tackles and a 0.0% missed tackle rate.
By 2024, Sherwood had become a key player for the Jets’ defense, starting in all 16 games he played and amassing 158 tackles with a 5.4% missed tackle rate. His pass coverage improved significantly, allowing 40 completions on 52 targets for 349 yards and 2 touchdowns.
