The Florida Panthers’ surprise acquisition of Brad Marchand just before the NHL trade deadline raised expectations that the 36-year-old veteran could be a decisive figure in the postseason. While he wasn’t expected to carry a heavy offensive load during the regular season, a string of injuries on the roster has placed the former Boston Bruins captain under increased scrutiny.
After a relatively quiet start to his tenure with Florida, Marchand finally lit the lamp for the first time in his new jersey during Thursday’s 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings. The No. 63 winger capitalized on a second-period offensive sequence, recovering a loose puck and finishing the play in clinical fashion. It marked his first goal as a Panther and served as a sigh of relief for fans in Sunrise, eager to see the experienced forward contribute on the scoreboard.
“I’m just enjoying this whole journey; it is such a unique experience for myself,” Marchand told NHL.com. The veteran winger spent his first 16 NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins before being traded.
“I have been part of really good teams that have accomplished big things, and some that haven’t. Regardless, what you realize is these opportunities are few and far between. Enjoy every day in this League, and I’m having a lot of fun right now.” He added.
Marchand scores at a crucial time ahead of the postseason
With the Stanley Cup Playoffs quickly approaching, Panthers supporters welcomed the timing of Marchand’s goal, which came in his eighth game wearing the Florida sweater. He now sits at 50 points on the 2024–25 campaign.
A vital asset amid Panthers’ injury woes
Marchand’s value to Florida only increases as the team battles key injuries heading into the NHL postseason. Matthew Tkachuk hasn’t played since the 4 Nations Championship due to a groin injury, while Sam Bennett has missed the last week with an upper-body issue. The availability of both players remains uncertain for the playoffs, placing even more emphasis on Marchand’s ability to deliver in big moments.
