Bryce Harper breaks silence on Bryson Stott’s struggles with Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have been dealing with some offensive struggles lately, and one of the players feeling the weight of that slump is Bryson Stott — prompting Bryce Harper to speak up and make his thoughts clear about his teammate.

Bryce Harper is known for speaking positively about his teammates, especially when some come under heavy fire from critics — like Bryson Stott, who’s been struggling at the plate recently. Over his last four games with the Philadelphia Phillies, Stott’s production has dipped noticeably.

“He’s here for a reason…” Harper said when asked about Stott, later adding,“he’s one of the best second basemen in the league.” Stott went hitless in four at-bats in the Phillies’ most recent game against the Angels.

Harper acknowledged his teammate’s slump: “Obviously, it’s been tough for him in the batter’s box as of late,” referencing Stott’s 1-for-15 stretch over the past four games. Still, Harper made it clear the team believes in him: “He’s just gotta keep going and believe in himself.”

How bad has July been for Stott?

Stott has played in 10 games for the Phillies so far this July — with the team winning four of them — and he’s managed just 5 hits, 2 runs, 3 RBIs, and a home run, with a rough .156 batting average. His numbers at this point last month were only slightly better, with 9 hits and a .164 average.

Among all Phillies hitters this season, Stott currently ranks 11th in batting average at .232. While his contact numbers have dipped, he’s not far off in other categories — he’s logged 38 RBIs this season, just one behind Harper, and ranks 8th on the team in strikeouts with 59.

Phillies Fans React to Harper’s Comments

Some fans responded to Harper’s defense of Stott — now in his fourth MLB season with the Phillies — by saying they appreciate his defense at second base but don’t see him as one of the league’s best at the position or as a reliable hitter.

“Bro stop lying to yourself. He’s a great defensive player, but he’s not and has never been a good hitter,” one fan posted on X. “He’s too much of an offensive liability to be in the lineup every day just for his defense.”

Another fan wrote: “Bryce I love you and I understand he’s your friend, he just can’t cut it at the plate. His bat speed is slower than almost anyone in the league, and he struggles to hit any fastball down the middle. It’s time to either continue to bat him 9th or play Sosa every day.”
