Carlos Mendoza has been watching closely as Tylor Megill battles through a rough stretch on the mound for the New York Mets. The right-hander has allowed eight runs over his last 9.2 innings, putting him in a tough spot. Still, the Mets’ manager appears to be standing by his pitcher.
“We’re pretty confident with his ability, his maturity, the guys that we got in here,” Mendoza said after the game against the Cubs. “He was pretty good two outings ago. I think it’s just one of those where today probably wasn’t at his best, and I feel like just the life on the fastball — I thought he got better. I saw 94–95 in the fourth and the fifth and he got some swings-and-misses at the top, but early on I didn’t see that.”
Megill also addressed the media after the game, acknowledging early trouble in the first inning where his pitch count spiked. “Just trying to make pitches and limit damage, and obviously ran up the pitch count there,” he said.
Three straight rough outings for Megill
With Mendoza voicing confidence in Megill, the right-hander should be in line for another opportunity to right the ship. He’s coming off a 4.2-inning outing in which he allowed four runs, adding to a string of difficult starts. Against the Cardinals, he allowed four earned runs over five innings; and against the Nationals, three earned runs in 6.1 innings. All three MLB games ended in Mets losses.

“I think after that first inning, [I] did a really good job limiting pitches throughout there,” Megill said to SNY about his start against the Cubs. “Obviously got pulled there in the fifth, but pitch count was kinda where it needed to be. After getting pulled, looking back at it after the first inning [I] managed well.”

Next start could be crucial
Megill’s next appearance might be his most important of the season. He’s in line to pitch in the highly anticipated Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees — a prime opportunity to bounce back and prove he can move past this recent slide.
