Carlos Mendoza couldn’t hide his satisfaction following the New York Mets‘ Opening Day victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Beyond the win, the second-year manager was quick to highlight the discipline and depth of his first lineup card of 2026.

“Overall, 1 through 9, it was a pretty solid day, and it says a lot about the offense we have here,” Mendoza told reporters post-game. “The first inning was especially impressive. Seeing [Francisco] Lindor set the tone by working a walk—that’s exactly what we’ve been preaching.”

The Mets ultimately outslugged the Pirates 11-7 in a back-and-forth affair at Citi Field. Powered by a two-homer performance from Brandon Lowe and a gritty two-run effort from Ryan O’Hearn, New York proved too much for a resilient Pittsburgh squad.

While the Mets look to carry this momentum into game two of the series, the club also received a medical update: Mike Tauchman finally has a firm timeline for his return to the active roster following knee surgery.

Youth movement: Benge shines in big league debut

The biggest story of the afternoon, however, was Carson Benge. After Mendoza showed faith in the prospect by penciling him into the Opening Day lineup, Benge played with the poise of a seasoned veteran.

In a debut most players only dream of, Benge launched his first career home run in just three at-bats. He finished the day with two runs scored and two walks, showing a sophisticated eye at the plate.

He wasn’t the only youngster to flash power; Francisco Alvarez was equally decisive, turning in a multi-hit game highlighted by a towering home run of his own.

Mendoza on Benge’s poise

During his post-game press conference, Mendoza went out of his way to praise Benge’s mental toughness, noting that the rookie didn’t let early struggles rattle him.

“Who he is is just super-consistent,” Mendoza said. “He was 0-for-2 with a couple of strikeouts early, but he still felt good about his chances. He stayed within himself and delivered.”
