The New York Mets have been struggling recently, currently holding a 62-51 record after a disappointing home loss to the Cleveland Guardians. After a promising start to the MLB season, the Mets have found themselves treading water in the NL East as the Philadelphia Phillies threaten to pull away.
A significant part of New York’s struggles stems from their pitching staff, which has underperformed for most of the MLB season. The rotation’s inconsistency has been a key factor in the Mets’ inability to maintain their early momentum.
However, there is hope on the horizon. “(Tylor) Megill has been absent from the Mets’ rotation since the middle of June because of a right elbow sprain but threw 20 pitches in a simulated game at Citi Field on Sunday,” reported Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. “He is expected to extend to two innings in another session on Thursday. A rehab assignment will follow shortly thereafter, putting Megill on track to potentially rejoin the Mets’ rotation later this month.”
How will Tylor Megill’s return impact the Mets’ rotation?
Megill was one of the more reliable pitchers in the Mets’ rotation earlier this year, helping the team lead the majors with a 2.82 ERA prior to his injury. Since his absence, New York’s pitching has ranked 26th in the league, a drastic decline that has hindered their playoff aspirations.

His potential return could stabilize the rotation and provide the Mets with the much-needed boost to compete in the tight NL East race. If Megill regains his form, the pitching staff’s performance could significantly improve in the critical stretch run.

Can the Mets overcome their recent struggles and catch the Phillies?
The Mets have lost eight of their last nine games, and their offense has struggled as well, recently being no-hit by the Guardians before a late Juan Soto home run avoided a shutout. Despite high championship expectations following last season’s deep playoff run and the addition of Soto, the Mets now trail the Phillies by 2.5 games.

With upcoming games against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Mets have a chance to reset and refocus. The return of Megill could be a catalyst for change, but the team will need strong performances both on the mound and at the plate to keep their postseason hopes alive.
