Nolan Arenado has been one of the best players in the MLB for quite some time now after doing impressive things with the Colorado Rockies. Arenado is one of the best third basemen in the game and every offseason he’s linked with a move away from Colorado.
This year that possibility appears to be bigger than ever, with Arenado being linked with several teams around the league. The biggest obstacle for him, though, is his hefty contract and the possibility that he opts out of it after only one season with a new franchise.
He still has six years and $199 million left on his contract with the Rockies but every team around the Majors would be happy to have him on the roster, including the current World Series champions Los Angeles Dodgers.
Los Angeles Dodgers can land Nolan Arenado the same way they landed Mookie Betts
The Dodgers can pair Nolan Arenado with Mookie Betts and create one of the best rosters in baseball, but that won’t be an easy job for them. There are ways to get a deal done with the Rockies and one that could leave the Los Angelenos team in a very good position.
Mike Oz of Yahoo Sports presents a very good idea for the Dodgers to pursue Arenado the same way they did with Mookie Betts last year. As we all know, that was a great decision for the Dodgers given how great Mookie was for them, helping them win their first World Series in over 30 years.
Could the Dodgers, the defending champs, go into full super team mode and add Arenado to go with Mookie Betts? Here’s how they match up:
Fit: The Dodgers and Arenado have been linked together for years now. He’s a SoCal guy originally, and now the timing may be right. Justin Turner is a free agent and third base is open. The Rockies are stalled and more open to a possible rebuild. The Dodgers always have the money to spend, but it could limit what they’re able to do in the future when Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger hit free agency.
Return: The Dodgers were able to get Mookie Betts without trading their premier young talents — Dustin May, Gavin Lux and Will Smith. Could they do the same with Arenado? It would be quite a steal if so. Lux would almost certainly have to go in this deal. L.A.’s top prospect Josiah Gray would also seem to jibe with Colorado’s needs, but if any team can take on enough money to avoid parting with elite prospects, it’s the Dodgers.
This is definitely a great idea for the Dodgers but it’s still a long shot for them to pair these two to lead them for several years to come. Los Angeles are a team with plenty of talent and they’ll always be competitive so winning won’t be a problem for Arenado, especially with his presence in the dugout.
The Dodgers just won a championship a couple of months ago and this move would assure him at least two more titles in the future. It remains to be seen if they pull the trigger and if the Rockies actually agree to one of the offers they present.
