The New York Mets are facing a troubling stretch after dropping 14 of their last 16 games, falling six games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. With just a half-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for the final NL wild-card spot, the Mets are confronting a critical juncture in their 2025 campaign.

Despite a strong start to the season, boasting the best record in baseball through June 12 at 45-24, New York has struggled mightily since then, posting a 19-34 record over the subsequent stretch. Only the Washington Nationals have fared worse over that span, leaving Mets fans increasingly anxious.

“Bottom line, we got to start playing better,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, according to ESPN. “Especially when you get the lead, we got to be able to shut those games down. Again, too much talent back there.”

It’s hard to describe, especially with how much talent and elite arms we got back there,” Mendoza added, emphasizing the frustration behind the team’s recent struggles.

Why are the Mets struggling despite bullpen reinforcements?

The Mets’ recent losses have highlighted recurring bullpen issues, despite front-office efforts to bolster the relief corps with marquee acquisitions like Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers. Thursday’s performance from starter Kodai Senga, who delivered 5⅔ strong innings, was squandered when Helsley failed to hold a one-run lead, exemplifying the persistent struggles in closing games.

Can the Mets turn their season around with only 40 games left?

With only 40 games remaining in the regular season, the Mets face mounting pressure to reverse their slide. Shortstop Francisco Lindor acknowledged the team’s struggles: “We have all asked that question, and it’s tough to point out one thing. We are all trying to win ballgames. All I can think of right now is that we’re not clicking at the same time and the other team is outplaying us.”
