The New York Yankees continue to make fundamental mistakes that leave everyone stunned—from opponents to fans to even the broadcast booth. Commentators Michael Kay and Paul O’Neill didn’t hold back after a routine play turned into a costly error late in the game.
“Michael, you get to a point where you just can’t make this up … it’s like a Little League game going on out here,” O’Neill said after a Yankees outfield miscue allowed the Marlins to tie the game at 12 in the top of the 9th inning.
Kay followed up with a sharp response: “This whole game, Paul, kind of has the feel of you’re having a bad dream and you cannot wake up.” The Yankees went on to lose the game 13-12.
The blunder that set off Kay and O’Neill
This time, the error didn’t come from Anthony Volpe—who actually had a strong game against Miami—but rather from José Caballero. The former Rays infielder, recently added to the Yankees roster, was filling in for Aaron Judge in the outfield when the misplay occurred.
Total collapse against the Marlins
The game was a complete disaster for the Yankees. They led 6-0 in the top of the 5th inning but allowed four runs in the frame. Even after extending the lead to 9-4 in the 7th, the bullpen couldn’t hold it, and the Marlins stormed back to take a 10-9 lead. Much of the blame fell on the Yankees’ relief pitching.
“All three relievers that the Yankees acquired, that were so touted,” Kay said. “They all did not do their job tonight… we keep digging new holes, Paul. And this one goes under the worst loss of the year.”
