Rob Thomson isn’t wasting any time. The Philadelphia Phillies manager is doing everything he can to make the necessary adjustments — and one of those could involve giving Otto Kemp a shot at a different position in an effort to tighten up the defense and help sustain Philadelphia’s current hot streak.
According to Thomson’s recent comments, he’s open to trying Kemp in the outfield — specifically in left field — a move that would also allow one of his teammates to contribute in the infield.
“Rob Thomson expects to give Otto Kemp some runway in left field as a potential platoon partner for Max Kepler. Buddy Kennedy can play first, giving the Phillies flexibility. Kemp hasn’t played in left yet in the majors but has been getting outfield work outside of games,” reported Lochlahn March on X.
Why is Thomson considering Kemp in the outfield?
It likely comes down to Kemp’s recent MLB performance at the plate. While he hasn’t played left field in a while, his .282 batting average stands well above Kepler’s .220, making the idea more appealing to the manager.
Kemp has made a strong impression since his call-up. In addition to filling in for Bryce Harper, he’s producing consistently at the plate — tallying 11 hits in 11 games — which has been a key factor in the Phillies’ recent 8–2 run over their last 10 games.

Kemp isn’t the only one making a case
Despite not being a regular starter, Kemp is showing he deserves a real shot at a bigger role. Other players have also stepped up when given the chance this season, including Weston Wilson, who has appeared in 20 games, and Cal Stevenson, who’s quietly started to contribute in his own way.
