The Detroit Tigers were dealt a devastating blow this week with the news that ace Tarik Skubal is expected to miss multiple weeks. The left-hander is set to undergo surgery, forcing the Tigers to pivot and stabilize a rotation suddenly missing its biggest arm.
With Skubal sidelined, Detroit is rolling out a multi-man contingency plan to bridge the gap. Tyler Holton is slated to serve as the “opener” for Monday’s clash against the Boston Red Sox, while Keider Montero is expected to see an increased workload in a more permanent rotation role alongside the recently recalled Ty Madden.
The Tigers will also lean heavily on veteran presence Justin Verlander, who returned to Detroit this offseason on a one-year, $13 million deal. Verlander is expected to anchor the staff alongside fellow marquee acquisition Framber Valdez, providing much-needed stability until Skubal can return to the bump.
Additionally, the front office has already begun addressing the lack of depth, acquiring Yoniel Curet from the Philadelphia Phillies. As the Tigers navigate the regular season without their Cy Young contender, the pressure is on the new-look staff to keep the team in the hunt.

Is there room for another addition to the rotation?
If the current plan falter—or if Montero struggles with the increased volume—the Tigers may be forced back to the trade market. Rumors are already swirling that Detroit could look outside the organization to bolster their ranks.
Names like Max Meyer (Marlins) and Logan Henderson (Brewers) have been floated by insiders as young, controllable arms that a contending Tigers team could target to solidify their postseason aspirations.
Detroit Tigers’ projected rotation
As Detroit continues to shuffle the deck in Skubal’s absence, the rotation will take on a new look to face the upcoming challenges of the American League slate.
- Framber Valdez (LHP)
- Jack Flaherty (RHP)
- Casey Mize (RHP)
- Justin Verlander (RHP)
- Ty Madden / Keider Montero (RHP)
