The New York Yankees continue to struggle on the mound, but despite their pitching issues, they head into the new week with more than 20 wins and sit atop the AL East, slightly ahead of other contenders like the Red Sox—who also just made it into the Top 10 in rotation ERA.

As of the week of May 12, the New York Mets lead the majors in rotation ERA with a 2.88 mark through 41 games this season. Kodai Senga anchors the rotation with a stellar 1.16 ERA, followed by Griffin Canning at 2.36.

Meanwhile, the Yankees barely made the cut, landing in the No. 10 spot with a 3.71 ERA. They sit just behind the Red Sox (3.63) and slightly ahead of the Rays (3.74). Max Fried is the only Yankees starter with an ERA under 2.00, posting an impressive 1.06 that has helped keep the team afloat.

Top 10 rotation ERAs heading into the week

While standings are bound to shift as the week unfolds, the Mets’ dominance atop the leaderboard and the Royals’ second-place standing at 2.99 reflect an overall improvement in starting pitching across the MLB this year. Still, New York’s NL squad is clearly setting the pace.

Yankees still navigating rotation concerns

Aaron Boone’s latest comments about Marcus Stroman’s slow recovery didn’t help ease concerns, as the Yankees are now without another potential contributor in their rotation. The absence of Gerrit Cole—who isn’t expected to return until 2026—only adds to the pressure.

The Yankees are 5-4 so far in May, having recently won a series over the Athletics (2-1) and another at home against the Padres. Most of the rotation sits with ERAs above 3.00, with Max Fried standing out as the lone ace with a perfect 6-0 record, becoming the team’s de facto anchor.
