No one likes to lose in the NBA, especially not in the playoffs. Then again, players should never cross the line between being frustrated and being dirty, as it happened last night in Game 3 of the first-round series between Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns.
With the game already out of reach, Suns star Devin Booker pushed Lakers guard Dennis Schroder mid-air. The German guard fell hard and spent a couple of seconds on the hardwood, luckily, he was unharmed.
Things got heated between the two teams and the referees had to intercede, ejecting Booker with a flagrant two foul. Nonetheless, that wasn’t enough to soothe the situation, as Anthony Davis called him out in his two post-game interviews.
Anthony Davis Calls Out Devin Booker Over Dirty Foul On Dennis Schroder
“Can’t happen. Can’t do that,” Davis said right after the game. “I mean, they’ve been chirping, it’s playoff basketball. But you don’t push a guy out the air like that, two hands. It’s a dirty play, Dennis could’ve really gotten hurt right there. We keep it in-between the lines. I know Monty (Williams), he’s not that type of coach (…)my coach for three years. But that just can’t happen. Hard fouls, things like that, playoff basketball, we accept those. But just to blatantly push a guy with two hands out the air, it’s a scary play. Good thing he’s OK, but plays like that are unacceptable.”
Davis went to the locker room but was clearly still angry about the situation. Then, in his post-game media availability via Zoom, he doubled-down on his stance and called out the Kentucky product once again:
“It was a physical game, all game. Guys chirping. Me, Jae, ‘Bron, Dennis, Book, (Deandre Ayton) had some words. That’s playoff basketball. Guys gonna chirp, guys gonna talk. But we can’t allow plays like that to happen. (…) Whether it was out of frustration or not, it was a scary play. Luckily, Dennis was alright. But sometimes it can end badly for a player. We don’t want to let the chirping lead to something like that,“ Davis added.
We love playoff basketball because of its intensity and how hard players fight to win. That doesn’t mean that they should go all the way and blatantly try to hurt his rivals. That’s not what it’s all about.
