Let's be honest for a second. It'll take decades - if ever - before the New England Patriots forget about Tom Brady, arguably the greatest player in NFL history. But, judging by what we've seen thus far, it may not take long before they have a new franchise quarterback.

The Patriots struggled mightily with Cam Newton carrying Brady's torch last season but missing the playoffs ended up being a blessing in disguise. They got the 15th pick in the Draft and used it to build towards the future.

And that future may not be that far ahead, as Mac Jones had an impressive preseason debut and some believe that could swoop in and take the starting quarterback job at some point next season.

While far from ready, Jones was pretty impressive during his first game. He played with poise, was in control, and completed some tough passes. He finished 13/19 for 87 yards and looked pretty confident all night long.

Cam Newton Praises Jones' Work Ethic

That's why Newton didn't hesitate to shower the rookie in praise, claiming that the best part about him is his work ethic and how hard he works to perfect his craft and be a better player every single day:

“He came and talked to me, and we talked it out about just his expectation. Every young quarterback goes through it — the excitement, the anticipation,” Newton told Mike Reiss of ESPN. “He wants to be so perfect, and I see his preparation is always pristine. That’s what I admire about him. Everybody learns different, but he’s just going to keep getting better, and we’re going to be here for each other along this whole process."

Newton may be the starter - for now - as Jones still isn't ready to be out there. But it doesn't seem like he'll need a lot of time to show why he was one of the best quarterbacks in college football.
