The Los Angeles Chargers were a in a place where no NFL franchise wants to be. However, last season they hired head coach Jim Harbaugh, and all of a sudden, order arrived at Inglewood. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman also joined and after one year, he is now sending a warning to the rest of the teams.
Roman saw a not-so-great offensive roster in his first year. The silver lining was being able to explode rookie WR Ladd McConkey. The former Georgia Bulldog was incredible. Now, Roman says the WR corp is “night and day” from last year.
During an episode of the Chargers Weekly Podcast, Roman said about McConkey, “Just so dependable. We were able to do things with Ladd in Year 1 that you generally don’t do with a guy until Year 3 or 4. His football IQ, a lot of different things that give him options to get open and stuff like that, graduate-level stuff, as I like to call it.”
Roman continued by saying,“We’re really looking forward to growing in that department, too, because our receiving corps right now, compared to this time last year, it’s night and day.“

Ladd McConkey #15 warms up during a Los Angeles Chargers OTA offseason workout on May 20, 2024 in Costa Mesa, California.
Ladd McConkey will lead the way
The Chargers know they have a golden boy in QB Justin Herbert. However, their depth chart isn’t that stacked. Herbert doesn’t have many weapons but McConkey will be the first option as he’s earned that right.

McConkey had 1,149 yards and 7 TDs in his rookie season. What surprised, though, was how safe his hands were. He caught 73.2% of the passes thrown his way. That’s hard to do in the NFL.
Now, the rest should follow. As it currently stands, the number two option should be third-year WR Quentin Johnston. At 6’4″ and with speed, Johnston should be the weapon targeted for when Herbert launches his missiles. Having said that, Johnston is in a do-or-die season for him, as his drops have been noticeable. While McConkey is safe as a vault, Johnston’s career catching percentage is 58.9%.
Veteran Mike Williams is returning to L.A. after a year away. Mike Williams has a knack for spectacular catches. Unfortunately, he is always having issues staying healthy. If he’s available, he should be a familiar and reliable face for Herbert.
Last but not least, Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman knew they needed something else. That’s why they drafted Tre Harris in the second round of the NFL draft. If Harris lives up to the hype, the Chargers will have one of the most explosive offenses in the league, as Roman hinted.
Jim Harbaugh knows his stuff
Super Bowl runner-up and College Football champion, Jim Harbaugh knows a thing or two about football. His first year in L.A. was about cleaning the mess before him. Now, he wants to take the Chargers to the next level.
Last season, they ended 11-6 but were decimated by the Texans in the Wild Card round. Rest assured Harbaugh will want to overcome that hurdle. As of now, Herbert has an 0-2 record in the playoffs. One of them was after leading 27-0 against the Jaguars. If someone can make him overcome that is Jim Harbaugh.
