After several weeks of handling various interviews for the head coach position, the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to hire Liam Coen to steer the teamās direction. Baker Mayfield, current star of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, shared the field with Coen last season, and before his departure, he offered a suggestive piece of advice regarding this situation.
During his introduction as the new head coach of the franchise, Coen made it clear to the press the main reasons why he decided to take the job: āAt the end of the day? It came down to business,ā the HC told the Tampa Bay Times. āIt did. It came down to family and business and a dream that was right in front of you! Not maybe down the road. How do you say no to that?ā
Additionally, he mentioned a curious suggestion from quarterback Baker Mayfield, with whom he recently worked together on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former Browns and Rams player advised Coen to take the job without hesitation.
āLiterally, Iām FaceTiming with Baker and the O-linemen in the Bahamas and theyāre like, āLiam! Go get that! You go get that!ā ā Coen said. āAnd (running back) Bucky (Irving) is telling me that he loves me. I just texted with (receiver) Mike Evans. Heās at the Pro Bowl. Guess what? If my coaches and my players, if theyāre good, Iām good.ā

āHow do we make Trevor Lawrence and this offense as dynamic and explosive as we can be? Weāve got to build it around him, weāve got to make every part of this about improvement, and he will be a part of that process,ā Coen said. āHeās earned that right. I cannot respect his toughness and mentality and work ethic more than I do already from afar. This will all be about Trevor.ā

The HC will miss his players in the Bucs
While his arrival at the Jaguars is an opportunity he couldnāt pass up, Liam Coen made it clear to the press how he feels about having coached players of the caliber of Baker Mayfield in Tampa.
āItās an opportunity,ā Coen said. āNot that the other was out of the question, but this is now. Itās just the feeling I had when I accepted the Bucs (new contract), it was, āOkay.ā But when I said okay to the (second Jaguars) interview, it was just a completely different feeling I had. It was like, āThis is how Iām supposed to feel right now.ā
āAnd I think everybody would want that. I mean, itās not like I didnāt want to coach Baker. Who wouldnāt want to coach Baker? I loved coaching him. But this is right now.ā
