Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers shocked the NFL after a trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith. However, what many fans don’t understand is why they included Minkah Fitzpatrick in the deal.
However, according to a report by Gerry Dulac, the Steelers had already been considering parting ways with the safety for several reasons. When Miami met the expected price, Omar Khan didn’t hesitate to make the deal.
“They were willing to move on from Minkah Fitzpatrick because for what they were paying him, his lack of splash pays was not commensurate with the dollar figure he was getting. Minkah Fitzpatrick is a good football player, but, you go over the last two years, there’s no scooping scores, there’s no picks, there’s no pick sixes. There’s no game changing plays and you’re paying him a lot of money to do that and he wasn’t doing that.”
Who did the Steelers trade?
The Pittsburgh Steelers traded safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for tight end Jonnu Smith and star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The Steelers also received a 2027 seventh-round pick and sent a fifth-round pick for that same year to the Dolphins.
Despite now having a hole to address at the safety position, Pittsburgh and Mike Tomlin prioritized a strong trio of names in their secondary with Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., and Darius Slay.
