NFL News: Aaron Glenn sends clear message to Justin Fields after bad performances with Jets in preseason

Justin Fields' preseason struggles haven't shaken Aaron Glenn. The Jets head coach made it clear he believes in his young quarterback, backing him publicly and setting the tone for a season where Fields is expected to take charge and prove his potential.

Justin Fields has faced heavy criticism after two preseason games and what has been seen in training camp with the Jets. However, the team’s head coach, Aaron Glenn, sent a message of complete confidence in his young quarterback, laughing off analyses in the national media that consider fewer than ten plays enough to issue judgments.

ā€œYou have so many people that want to talk about a small amount of plays these guys get to go out there and play. And then everything is falling down because we throw six passes. Then, he’s Johnny Unitas when we throw four passes. So, it bothers me, and I laugh at it quite a bit. But the thing is, I understand it because that’s the noise that happens on the outside.ā€

Fields completed one pass in five attempts for 4 yards in the second preseason game against the Giants, and previously in the opener facing the Packers, his stat line was 3 of 4 for 42 yards. That’s what has sparked criticism for the man stepping in to replace Aaron Rodgers.

Who is starting quarterback for the Jets?

Justin Fields is the Jets’ starting quarterback. Aaron Glenn made that decision upon joining the team, showing Aaron Rodgers the door and convincing Fields that New York was a better option for his future than Pittsburgh.

The 2024 season was very bittersweet for Fields. After leaving the Bears, the quarterback started the first six games of the season with the Steelers, posting a 4-2 record and showing flashes that he could be the franchise’s future option.

Despite this, Mike Tomlin benched him to give preference to Russell Wilson, and after that decision, Justin never really got a chance to compete for the starting role again. The Jets, however, are giving him that guarantee.
