Brock Purdy has finally signed a new deal with the San Francisco 49ers. However, the quarterback included a strong no-trade clause that has recently created problems for Kirk Cousins with the Atlanta Falcons.

The 49ers have now secured their starting quarterback for the next five years. In a surprising turn of events, Purdy went from being the “Mr. Irrelevant” of the 2022 NFL Draft to leading the offense of one of the league’s most iconic franchises.

Purdy was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which is why he pushed for an extension this offseason. The 49ers responded quickly, offering him a massive deal that makes him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.

Brock Purdy gets real on his no-trade clause in new 49ers contract

Brock Purdy’s rise has been one of the most remarkable stories in recent years. The former Iowa State quarterback, selected last overall in 2022, is now the undisputed starter for the 49ers.

When San Francisco was in desperate need of a quarterback following injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, Purdy stepped up and exceeded all expectations. He’s already led the team to two playoff runs, including a Super Bowl appearance.

Despite a rocky 2024 season—largely due to injuries, both his own and his teammates’—the 49ers knew they had to lock him in long-term. They’ve now agreed to a five-year, $265 million extension. But one clause in the contract has drawn special attention.

Purdy included a no-trade clause, giving him control over any potential future moves. While not uncommon among top-tier quarterbacks, it’s a clause that has caused complications for Kirk Cousins, who has a similar deal with the Falcons.

Kirk Cousins is currently stuck in Atlanta due to his no-trade clause

Currently, the Falcons are expected to start rookie Michael Penix Jr. over Cousins in 2025. Due to his no-trade clause, the team cannot move Cousins unless he agrees to waive it—leaving the veteran likely stuck as a backup, despite believing he can still start.

“I think it’s important, yes, but also that’s something that my agent and I had discussed with what other quarterbacks have around the league and stuff in their contract,” Purdy said on his no-trade clause. “But, for me, was it going to be a determining factor in signing it or not? No. We were very grateful that we had it in there, but at the end of the day, like I said, everything else that the contract entails we’re extremely excited about, so we’re just grateful how it turned out.”

How much is Brock Purdy getting paid?

As mentioned, Brock Purdy’s new contract is worth $265 million over five years, including a $40 million signing bonus and $182.5 million in guaranteed money.

The deal runs through the 2030 season, when Purdy will be 31 years old. There is a potential opt-out in 2028; if exercised, it would leave the 49ers with $16 million in dead cap.
