The Tennessee Titans had the privilege of holding the first overall pick in the most recent NFL Draft, using it to acquire Cam Ward — one of the most highly touted quarterbacks coming out of college football. Now, the former Gator knows he has everything it takes to shine in his rookie season, even if the environment for him may not be ideal.

As Brian Callahan’s team begins to show its first real signs of intensity at training camp, Ward is fully aware that all eyes are on him — a spotlight that could potentially impact him in more ways than one.

Despite the situation, the talented signal-caller remains focused on performing at his best. He’s determined to tune out the outside noise and concentrate on improving his game in every possible way.

“I don’t care about the hype,” he stated in a recent interview with Jeff Howe of TheAthletic.com. “I don’t care about social media. All I care about is this 100-yard field. … At the end of the day, football takes care of everything.

I don’t think I’m being welcomed in [the league] with open arms,” Ward added. “I was the first pick. I’m blessed to be that. But at the end of the day, there’s a target on my back. There’s a target on everyone’s back in the league, but I’m trying to prove myself to my teammates.”

Cam Ward’s biggest motivation

Ward has tremendous talent, which he’ll need to prove during his rookie season with the Titans. While many suggest that pressure might not play in favor of the former Gator, he believes that his father’s example will guide him to do things the right way.

“Good things only come to people who work,” the QB said. “Growing up, I saw my dad wake up at 4:30 a.m. doing a job he didn’t like. If I can’t wake up early to do a job I do like, I just think I shouldn’t be here.”

Ward’s NFL debut

Cam Ward’s long-awaited NFL debut is just around the corner, and it won’t come easy. The Titans face five tough matchups to open the season — a stretch that will be key in proving what this team is truly made of.
