The Houston Texans have ruled David Montgomery out of the remainder of the game against the Tennessee Titans. It seems like the running back suffered a groin injury. Hence, the team’s RB depth chart is getting thinner.
Montgomery is the RB1 of the team, though the Texans operate on a committee where he shares plenty of snaps, mainly to Woody Marks. Now, it seems like a workhorse role is coming to the latter against the Titans. This is the RB depth chart now that Montgomery is out:
- Woody Marks
- Dare Ogunbowale
Woody Marks is still a reliable option
Woody Marks might actually be the most explosive back on the roster. Marks is also younger than Montgomery and has been with the Texans longer, knowing the playbook better.

As it currently stands, Montgomery holds more yards than Marks, but that’s because he has more attempts. In fact, Montgomery is averaging a very mediocre 2.7 yards per carry. Marks averages a more reasonable 3.1, though that is still a low average per NFL standards.
The Texans running game is very bad
Houston’s running game is ranked 30th in the NFL. Hence, the Texans should really try to bring a real difference-maker. However, there’s more to just upgrade the running back. The offensive line is very bad.
The Houston Texans’ team offensive line ranks 24th overall in the NFL with a Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 67.4 for the 2026 season. Only right guard Wyatt Teller has a run block grade higher than 60.
Key takeaways
- David Montgomery was ruled out against the Titans after suffering a groin injury.
- Woody Marks is averaging 3.1 yards per carry compared to Montgomery’s 2.7 average.
