Justin Fields finally opened up about Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his introductory press conference as a new player for the Jets, the quarterback talked about the key moment last season when the head coach benched him in week 7 to give Russell Wilson a chance.
“It was different for me and a space I wasn’t really comfortable with. But Coach Tomlin made a decision he thought was best for the team. I’m never going to go against that. I just tried to change my perspective and get better in practice.”
Even though the Steelers believed that Fields could turn the franchise into Super Bowl contenders, the quarterback decided that his future was with the New York Jets to replace Aaron Rodgers.
Did Pittsburgh get Justin Fields?
No. The Pittsburgh Steelers couldn’t get Justin Fields despite making him a very significant offer. Instead, the quarterback signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets and in the press conference, he admitted that being benched by Mike Tomlin had nothing to do with his final decision.
“Not really (a factor in the decision). You can’t take things personal. At the end of the day, I was just excited about what the Jets had going on here. It didn’t have anything to do with Pittsburgh, but rather the opportunity I had here to make an impact.”
