Aaron Rodgers continues to delay his decision about joining the Pittsburgh Steelers as the starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season, with head coach Mike Tomlin’s team still waiting to finalize its roster for the upcoming campaign.
While Pittsburgh waits for clarity on A-Rod’s future, speculation surrounding the veteran quarterback’s possible arrival remains ongoing. In the meantime, Tomlin’s team hasn’t stopped working in the market and continues to bolster key areas of the roster, particularly on defense.
The Steelers have reportedly strengthened their secondary by signing safety Quindell Johnson, according to his agency, Universal Sports and Entertainment Management. Johnson played nine games with the Chicago Bears in 2023, recording three tackles and one interception.
After brief stints with the Rams and signing a reserve/futures contract with the San Francisco 49ers in January, the 25-year-old safety was released in May. Now, with his move to Pittsburgh confirmed, he’s looking to establish himself with an NFL franchise and get his career back on track.

Other Steelers moves
Johnson’s arrival adds to a series of free agency moves by the Steelers, who have also signed wide receiver DK Metcalf, cornerback Darius Slay, and linebacker Malik Harrison. The black & gold franchise has to put behind it a season in which they have failed to meet fans’ expectations and add variants in key positions.

These acquisitions show the team’s commitment to strengthening its roster ahead of the 2025 season. Meanwhile, Rodgers recently said he’s postponed his decision for personal reasons. In that context, the black & gold franchise is even considering backup options, such as Carson Wentz and Kirk Cousins.
