Trey Smith sends clear message to Andy Reid, Chiefs about his contract situation

Protecting Patrick Mahomes is a task the Kansas City Chiefs take seriously. However, guard Trey Smith is in contract talks, and he has sent a message to Andy Reid about his stance on it.

Football is won in the trenches. You can have the best quarterback in the NFL, namely Patrick Mahomes, but if he is running for his life, the Kansas City Chiefs wouldn’t be as prolific. Trey Smith is one of the guys tasked to protect Mahomes but his contract talks are still ongoing. He’s sent a clear message to Andy Reid and the front office about it.

Trey Smith appeared on the Up & Adams show. He was asked about his feelings on the contract dispute. ā€œI just leave it to the hands of my agents,ā€ Smith said. ā€œAnd obviously, the front office staff of the Chiefs are elite. At the end of the day, I let them take care of it. I just have to focus on being the best version of myself, being the best football player.ā€

It seems like Smith is playing nice and will stay focused on his football tasks, something that Andy Reid might love. However, his agents might not be that nice. The Chiefs have until July 15th to strike a long-term deal with Smith. The guard is scheduled to receive a $23.4 million paycheck in 2025 due to the franchise tag the team imposed on him.

From sixth round to Super Bowl winner

Smith was a sixth-round pick back in 2021. However, he has started 67 out of 68 possible games in his career. He’s helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl LVII and LVIII. He just recently made his first Pro Bowl in 2024.

Not everyone is Tom Brady folks, but Smith is certainly a story of overcoming all the odds. Smith is entering his final year of his rookie contract. His whole career has been in red but if he leaves, a new NFL team will be lucky.

Mahomes would love to keep Smith

The Chiefs’ O-Line has suffered quite some changes this offseason. Joe Thuney left, and they drafted left tackle Josh Simmons. So there’s been changes. That’s not something Mahomes would like. Getting great protection is key for him to unleash his magic.

The offensive line is the trickiest unit of them all. The players on it have to work like a swiss clock, synchronized to perfection. Otherwise, the run block is not polished, the quarterback is hurried (or hit), and penalties come in a bunch. The less changes, the better, so you can bet on the Chiefs to try and keep Smith’s services.
