Cale Makar etched his name in the NHL record books by scoring his 30th goal of the season, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a commanding 7-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Not only did this milestone secure the Avalanche’s spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but it also marked a historic achievement for Makar, who became just the ninth defenseman in league history to reach the 30-goal mark and the first since Mike Green in the 2008-09 season. While the night was celebratory for Colorado, it dealt another blow to Columbus, further dimming their already fading playoff hopes.
The Avalanche showcased their offensive firepower, with Nathan MacKinnon, Charlie Coyle, and Devon Toews each contributing a goal and two assists. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves, securing the win for Colorado, which now sits just six points behind the Dallas Stars in the race for second place in the Central Division.
Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar expressed his satisfaction at securing a postseason berth, emphasizing the hard work his team has put in all season. “We’re obviously really happy that we secured that (playoff) spot,” Bednar said, according to NHL.com.
“That’s the first step and the first goal that you set in training camp. It takes a long time to get here and a lot of hard work, but I’m proud of our guys for accomplishing that—especially under tough circumstances, coming in here tonight on a back-to-back.” Bednar added.

Cale Makar’s historic moment
Makar’s power-play goal—a one-timer from the left circle—sealed the victory for Colorado and cemented his place in NHL history. “It’s a great stat, but I definitely wouldn’t have reached it without these guys,” Makar said. “It’s a lot of effort from them getting me the puck and giving me chances.”
Makar’s humility stood in contrast to the magnitude of his achievement, which not only highlighted his individual talent but also showcased the Avalanche’s teamwork and chemistry.
