Former Chicago Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews is determined to make his return to the NHL after a two-year absence. Ahead of the 2025-26 season, the three-time Stanley Cup champion is reportedly closing in on his next team—the second of his career.

Toews is a Blackhawks legend thanks to his leadership and production during the glory days of the 2010s in Chicago. He will forever be remembered for captaining a dynasty that hoisted three Stanley Cups in six years. However, he is now expected to start from scratch on a new team during the upcoming campaign.

On that note, several sides in the NHL have shown interest in Toews. The 37-year-old, coveted veteran would be a pivotal addition for many contending teams. Particularly those in need of a leader who can keep the locker room in check through the highs and lows of the postseason.

The former Blackhawks captain has taken his time. Since announcing his plans to return to the NHL, little had emerged from Toews’ camp—until now. The former third overall selection in the 2006 NHL entry Draft has established a date for his decision, per an insider.

When is the 2025 NHL entry Draft?

This year’s edition of the NHL Draft will begin on Friday, June 27, and wrap up on Saturday, June 28. Toews’ decision on his second career franchise is expected to be announced sometime during that weekend.

However, it would only mean Toews has come to terms with an NHL franchise. His contract—as every other deal in the league—would start on July 1st. “[Toews] is expected to ink a short-term contract, likely one-year,” Pagnotta stated.

Canada-bound?

While it seems Toews won’t be returning to the Windy City during the 2025-26 NHL season, his next destination remains unclear. However, his new beginning is reportedly shaping up to be in Canada.
