The Los Angeles Kings have initiated contract extension talks with their top forward Adrian Kempe as he enters the final year of his current deal. General Manager Ken Holland shared insights about the ongoing negotiations during an appearance on SiriusXM NHL Network radio, signaling the organization’s intent to keep the rising star in Los Angeles long term.

Kempe, who was drafted in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft by the Kings, has developed into a key offensive weapon. Over 630 games with Los Angeles, he has accumulated 194 goals and 401 points, peaking with a career-best 35 goals in the 2024-25 season.

Holland expressed confidence in Kempe’s desire to remain with the team, emphasizing the importance of securing his future with the Kings. “In Kempe’s situation with [agent] J.P. Barry, we’ve talked a couple of times,” Holland said.

“We’re going to get ramped up here. Obviously, I’d like to sign him to an extension; he’s an important guy on the team. I believe he wants to stay. J.P. Barry said he wants to stay. I did talk to Adrian the day I was announced as manager, and got really good feelings from him. So, I’ve gotta get going on that front. Certainly, I want to get him signed to a long-term deal. He’s an important part of the team.” Holland added.

Why locking up Kempe matters

At just 28 years old entering the final year of his contract, Kempe could become a sought-after free agent if no extension is reached. With other notable forwards such as Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid potentially hitting the market, the Kings are motivated to act swiftly.

Securing Kempe not only preserves offensive continuity but also strengthens the team’s competitive window. His consistent goal-scoring and ability to contribute at all levels make him a cornerstone for the Kings’ ambitions in the coming years.
