The Toronto Maple Leafs are at a pivotal moment for the future of the team. After losing Mitch Marner in a trade with the Golden Knights, the team needs to surround Auston Matthews with talent to have another real shot at competing for the Stanley Cup.
Last season seemed like the perfect window to make their move, but the Leafs let a 2-0 series lead slip away in the second round of the playoffs against Brad Marchand and the Florida Panthers.
That latest disappointment led Marner to seek a fresh start in Vegas, leaving the Leafs in complete uncertainty. That’s why this free agency period is crucial to determine whether there will be redemption for the Canadian team.
Who did the Leafs sign in free agency?
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been active in free agency as they look to reshape their roster following the departure of Mitch Marner. In a notable move, the team acquired forward Matias Maccelli from Utah in exchange for a conditional third-round pick.
To solidify their core for next season, the Leafs also re-signed veteran center John Tavares to a four-year contract and Matthew Knies on a six-year deal. Other names in the roster will be Vinni Lettieri, Benoix-Olivier Groulx, Dakota Mermis, Travis Boyd, Michael Pezzetta and Steven Lorentz.

However, according to a report by Elliotte Friedman, the Leafs could still make another trade soon. “One of the other things I wonder about with the Leafs is could they move a D for a forward. It’s something I think they’ve looked at.”
