Mitch Marner believes the Vegas Golden Knights have what it takes to dethrone Brad Marchand and the Florida Panthers. In fact, although a trade wasn’t yet on the radar, the star realized during the Four Nations tournament with Team Canada the potential of reuniting with names like Mark Stone, Adin Hill, and Shea Theodore.

“They started making a winning atmosphere here. Just keep making this team better every single year. It’s a team that has a lot of star power. Getting to meet Theodore, Hill and Stone this year at the Four Nations was awesome as well. Just playing beside them, getting to know them very well. Hardworking guys that put whatever they got to win. That was pretty eye opening and special.”

Despite the criticism he has received for leaving Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marner has declared himself ready to leave behind his lack of playoff success and focus on this new challenge in his career.

What did the Toronto Maple Leafs get for Mitch Marner?

The Maple Leafs traded Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights in a one-for-one sign-and-trade deal that brought forward Nicolas Roy to Toronto. Before the trade was finalized, Marner agreed to an eight-year, $96 million contract, which allowed the Leafs to avoid losing him for nothing in free agency.

Did Mitch Marner leave Toronto?

Yes. Mitch Marner has officially left the Toronto Maple Leafs. After spending his entire NHL career with the team that drafted him in 2015, Marner was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in the summer of 2025 just before the start of free agency.
