Sidney Crosby has been involved in many rumors about a possible blockbuster trade in recent weeks. However, according to a report by John Shannon, the legend will not leave the Pittsburgh Penguins for a very special reason.
“I don’t ever see Sidney Crosby leaving Pittsburgh. Ever. I just don’t. In many ways, he has modeled himself after the person he has roomed with the first couple of years he was in Pittsburgh. That was Mario Lemieux at Mario’s house. Mario never played for any other team. Mario is still a legend in Pittsburgh. I think Sidney understands the value of what the Penguins are and what he is to the city of Pittsburgh.”
The big problem for Crosby is that he is 38 years old and, in the final stage of his career, the Penguins are trying to start a rebuilding process while being far from being a Stanley Cup contender. This has raised doubts about whether the Canadian player will look to compete for a championship elsewhere.
Is Sidney Crosby a free agent?
No. Sidney Crosby has a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins through the 2026-2027 season. Therefore, the only way he would leave the team is via a trade. In response to rumors about this scenario, Shannon reiterates that it won’t happen, not even at a potential trade deadline if the Penguins have a slow start to the next season.
“It’s not a Ray Bourque situation where after 20 years he hasn’t won the Stanley Cup. His name is enough on the Stanley Cup already. I think if you’re considering legacy to play your complete career with one team, that would be part of a legacy I think that Sidney Crosby would think is honorable.”
