The Toronto Maple Leafs, led by their superstar Auston Matthews, are heading into the 2025-26 season facing major changes in their offensive structure. Following Mitch Marner’s departure to the Vegas Golden Knights, the franchise is reorganizing its lines and weighing whether to lean more on young talent or explore the market to strengthen their attack ahead of the playoffs.
One of the names still on the table is Nick Robertson, a young forward who recently signed a one-year, $1.825 million extension to avoid arbitration. Despite that recent deal, the Leafs are reportedly considering moving him to clear cap space.
The presence of Matthews’ teammate on the roster is far from guaranteed, fueling speculation about his future. In that sense, three franchises are believed to be keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old’s situation as he could be looking for a fresh start.
Which teams could pursue Robertson?
NHL insider Jacob Punturi of Sports Illustrated named three potential landing spots for the Toronto winger if the franchise decides to move him: the Chicago Blackhawks, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Detroit Red Wings.

Nick Robertson #89 of the Toronto Maple Leafs celebrates a goal against the Montreal Canadiens during an NHL pre-season game at Scotiabank Arena on September 28, 2022 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
All three teams share a common interest in adding young offensive talent. Considering Robertson still has plenty to offer, Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh are all franchises currently in different stages of retooling for the upcoming season.

Why would Robertson leave the Leafs?
The main reason Toronto would consider trading Robertson is the salary cap. “The Maple Leafs need to clear out some players. They have too many,” insider Elliotte Friedman said on a recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast.
