Growing up in an era when Hall of Famer Patrick Roy had already retired as a player, Schaefer’s admiration for the Islanders’ head coach runs deep. Though they never crossed paths on the ice as players, Schaefer feels privileged to now learn under Roy’s leadership, recognizing his status as one of hockey’s all-time greats.

“Yeah, obviously he’s one of the best,” Schaefer said recently, according to NHL.com. “When I walked into the Upper Deck offices, I saw things about him all over the place. He’s been awesome to me. He’s not only a great hockey player but a great person. Having a coach like that is awesome.” This confidence reflects Schaefer’s eagerness to earn a spot on the Islanders’ opening night roster for the 2025-26 NHL season.

Focus on physical preparation

Schaefer emphasized the importance of physical development this offseason. “I think just getting in the gym, working hard to get bigger, stronger, and faster is going to be the big thing for me because I’m going to be playing against guys that are a lot older,” he explained. “So I have got to be able to compete with them.”
